Is the eye test mandatory for a Qatar driving license?

It is. The Ministry of Interior won't issue a license without a vision check, and it sits on the same list as your ID, photo and residence permit. There's no way around it, but there's also nothing to worry about, since the test itself is quick.

One thing people often miss is where the test is done. It has to be at a centre the Ministry recognises, otherwise the Traffic Department may not accept it. Al Dar Optics is on that list, which means one visit to us is enough.

Who needs a driving license eye test in Qatar?

Anyone starting at a driving school needs one before their file can be opened. So do residents swapping a license from back home for a Qatari one, and drivers who want to add a heavy vehicle or motorcycle category. If you failed an earlier attempt, you'll need to retest too. Renewals depend on the license type (more on that below).

As for age, light vehicles and motorcycles are open from 18. Heavy vehicles, machinery and public transport licenses start at 21.

Came to Qatar for a driver job? It's worth checking your traffic file before you book. Some recruits now take the eye test at a Qatar Visa Centre before they travel, and in that case the result may already be linked.

What happens during the test at Al Dar Optics?

There are four parts, and honestly most people are surprised how fast it goes.

  1. 01

    Distance vision

You'll read letters off a chart, covering one eye and then the other, then using both. We're checking that you can make out a road sign or a number plate from far enough away to react in time.

  2. 02

    Colour vision

You look at a few plates made of coloured dots and say what number you see. Red and green matter a lot on the road, from traffic lights to brake lights.

  3. 03

    Side vision

With your eyes fixed on one spot in front, we see how early you notice things creeping in from left and right. On Salwa Road, that's the part of your eyesight warning you about a pickup drifting into your lane.

  4. 04

    Eye health

The optometrist also has a proper look at the eye itself. Something like an early cataract won't always blur the letter chart, yet it can turn oncoming headlights at night into a real nuisance. Spot anything of that sort and we'll say so straight, no jargon, and tell you who to see.

Booking a slot: how does it work, and what do I carry?

Online booking takes a minute. Pick "driving license test", choose the branch closest to you and select a time. Walk-ins? Absolutely fine. Just know the LuLu stores get crowded after office hours, so booking ahead saves you a wait.

Your QID has to be the actual card, because a screenshot on your phone usually gets turned away. Glasses or lenses you drive with? Those as well. And if the driving school handed you a reference number, keep it somewhere you can find it fast.

Where does my result go, and when does it expire?

Your result goes onto the MOI system as soon as we finish, and your driving school sees it from their end.

Thirty days is the usual validity. So if your school slot is a month and a half off, hold on before booking the test, otherwise it might lapse and you'd be paying twice.

Glasses or contact lenses during the test: allowed?

Yes, allowed. Lots of drivers test in their specs. The catch is that if you only pass with them, a restriction gets printed on your license, and wearing them becomes compulsory every time you're behind the wheel.

Quick tip from us. Glasses already feeling a bit off? Deal with it before test day. Each branch is a complete optical shop, so a fresh prescription check and new frames or lenses can happen in one go.

Renewing a driving license in Qatar: is another eye test needed?

Short answer: it hinges on your license category. Heavy vehicle and other non-light categories nearly always need a fresh test at renewal. For light vehicles, it's sometimes requested and sometimes not. When you start the renewal on Metrash2, it will tell you. If it does ask for one, walk into any Al Dar branch and we'll get it sorted.

Failed the first time, so now what?

Honestly, it's common, and usually nothing serious. More often than not the cause is simple: no glasses at all, or an old pair that's stopped being strong enough. Our optometrist tells you what tripped you up, runs a full eye exam, and helps you pick lenses within your budget. Insurance may cover part of it too. Once the new pair arrives, book a retest.

Signs you should get your eyes checked before the test

Maybe road signs only come into focus when you're almost under them. Or oncoming headlights bother you more than they used to, or you've caught yourself squinting at the plate of the car in front. Headaches that kick in after a long drive up to Al Khor count as a warning as well. Recognise yourself in any of this? Get a full eye exam first, then do the driving test.
